8 Best Bitcoin Wallets for iOS - iPhone, iPad (2020 Updated)

Mobile wallets and security

So in the light of Coinbase Pro's recent fee hike, and because "not your keys, not your crypto", I'm planning to pull my coins (mostly Bitcoin/Ether and some DAI) out of their custody and into a proper non-custodial wallet. In preparation for that, I've recently downloaded a bunch of popular iOS wallet apps to take them for a test drive so I can make an informed decision.
My criteria for a wallet are as follows:
Wallets I've considered so far:
One thing I've noticed, and which strikes me as a bit odd, is that all of these wallets are free, and all of them quite professionally done. I literally could not find any wallet that costs money, which obviously raises the question "how are they paying their developers?" — As we all know from companies like Facebook and Google, if the product is free, then YOU'RE the product being sold. Sadly, none of these apps even address this seemingly obvious concern on their websites. At least Ethos takes the time to explain their wallet's security measures, however, just like with the other apps, you'll have to take them by their word when they say that your key never leaves your device.
Now, Coinbase Wallet and Trust Wallet are owned by major exchanges (Binance ownes the latter), so they are likely financed by revenues made from trading fees, and provided for free as a customer service. Trust has integrated support for Binance DEX, which would potentially create another stream of revenue for them, while Coinbase likely just want to offer a non-custodial solution for customers who are concerned about security.
The other wallets include fiat gateways, so I am assuming that this will pay for the development of their apps. Ethos also appears to be using this opportunity to shill their own token, so I guess that's another source of revenue for them. I do wish, however, that companies would take a more proactive approach and answer the obvious question "why should I trust YOU with my coins?" After all, you are putting yourself at risk to potentially lose a significant amount of money in case they mess up, and it wouldn't even be the first time.
Has anyone here used a software wallet to store a significant amount of coins (> $10k)? If so, which one, and why? Or should I just invest in a hardware wallet at this point? My gripes with the latter (I've test driven a Ledger Nano X before) are that ...
  1. Yet another device to keep track of (and potentially lose)
  2. UX is quite cumbersome (it's awfully annoying to enter a 4-8 digit PIN code using only two buttons)
  3. No biometric authentication (I'm sure that's bound to come at some point in the future)
Looking forward to hear your thoughts on this.
EDIT: add info about Ethos token

Crypto winter is over… Who survived?

The cryptocurrency market is experiencing tectonic changes. It’s not about a 108.36% increase in the cryptocurrency capitalization this year. It’s about the projects who weathered the crypto winter and entering the field.
Pillars of the traditional financial market are coming…
The market seems to start maturing, with institutional investors increasing their exposure to crypto. On May 31st the number of Bitcoin contracts on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange reached an all-time high. Cambridge Associates in their research mentioned that the industry “is developing, not faltering” and suggested that institutional investors should begin exploring it. Finally, according to Binance research, institutional investors were buying units in Grayscale Bitcoin Trust at a 40% premium.
Given my VC background, I find the following evidence even more conceiving than the mere price of bitcoin. It’s the established companies tapping the waters. In June Apple revealed that iOS 13 would have a cryptographic developer tool. Prior to that in March Samsung presented cryptocurrency wallet for its flagship phone. Nevertheless, both Apple and Samsung are merely addressing the needs of the existing cryptocurrency community, without meaningfully contributing to its growth.
New long awaited coins: Grams (TON) vs GlobalCoin (Facebook)
There are two major IT projects that are set to push the horizons of the blockchain adoption. The first one is Facebook GlobalCoin initiative. It would be a huge PR event for the industry and would dramatically boost liquidity by introducing new investors who were not accustomed to the world of the blockchain.
The second one is obviously Telegram with its Telegram Open Network. The publicly available archive with the client was updated to the next version on June 6th. Despite lower user base than that of Facebook, TON would face a better adoption thanks to the following facts:
All these facts prove that the future of the blockchain industry and cryptocurrency markets is quite bright.
Who are the major beneficiaries?
The major movers in the field became the cryptocurrency exchanges. Most of them are evolving into full-service financial companies, with crowdfunding functionality (IEO) and OTC desks. They also start targeting institutions. Some of them are still struggling to get traction with fiat payments though.
Overall, the cryptocurrency landscape seems to be clearer now, with many companies releasing nothing for months. With all the weeds taken out, we shall see a great advance in the blockchain space over the second half of 2019, in both financial services and blockchain segments.

How to claim BTG from Breadwallet without Coinomi (iPhone users)

I recently asked if anyone here had trouble retrieving BTG, if they held their BTC on Breadwallet at the time of the fork. After the fork I moved my BTC to a Ledger, but when I use the Ledger BTG split tool it shows my balance as 0.
This has been driving me crazy but I finally figured it out.
So it turns out the BTG was still sitting at my Breadwallet address, even though my Breadwallet shows a BTC balance of 0 and doesn’t offer BTG support.
Here’s how to get your BTG:
1 Download the iPhone apps Bit Pie and Bither. They seem a little sketch but this process worked for me and my BTG is now safely on Binance.
2 Follow steps 1-3 here
https://medium.com/@SimonEast/how-to-sweep-bitcoin-gold-btg-from-a-paper-wallet-using-ios-86010fa208de
3 You’ll need to convert your Breadwallet recovery phrase into a private key to complete step 4 at the link above. To do that I used this tool:
https://iancoleman.io/bip39/
Download that site and run it locally with your wifi turned off before you enter your private keys. Here is a link that explains the process:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2062242.0
4 To import the private key in Bither you need to tap options > advanced options > import private key > from private key text > click the camera icon to take a photo of the QR codes generated by the recovery phrase tool.
5 Follow the remaining steps 7-8 at the Medium link
6 Transfer from Bit Pie to Binance or an exchange of your choice
Good luck!
